NEO is an independent Southeast Asian publication that explores the intersections between science, nature and fashion through a culturally relevant lens for youth. It aims to break down barriers in science and climate communication, grounded in the belief that meaningful impact requires a deep, human-centric understanding of both the problem and the audience. Through collaborations with over 20 young individuals across Southeast Asia, and in combination with data interpretation, expert interviews and interactive touch points, NEO represents an urgent need to address the current state of the climate and our relationship with it, engaging with an audience that is capable of driving the most change. RESEARCH Coinciding with the final-year project, the first chapter of NEO's debut issue was born from Angeline's practice-based dissertation titled 'Dressing the Limit: Exploring Fashion Media as a Tool to Increase Awareness of Earth Overshoot Day Among Generation Z in Singapore.' Through this research, a data-heavy scientific concept underwent a double-translation process to produce an outcome containing a narrative sequence of fashion images incorporated with data and tactile interactions. Alongside two rounds of user-testing conducted with Gen Z subjects in Singapore, the outcomes were supported with data analysis by Asya Cecilia Sharon Haryanto and guided by valuable insights from an interview with Singaporean climate communicator Woo Qiyun (@theweirdandwild). Together, these collaborations achieved a successful translation of scientific concepts into an engaging, yet informative fashion media outcome.
