Keila Zaneta Arifin

Keila Zaneta Arifin is a womenswear, textile designer whose practice centres the study and exploration of Indonesian cultural heritage by using contemporary fashion as confrontational language. By specialising in textile techniques such as fabric dyeing, hand embroidery and mark-making, Keila reclaims her Indonesian identity as both an act of resistance and a celebration of Southeast Asian history while responding to the present. Her work assesses the social and cultural impacts of postcolonial narratives while translating traditional techniques into contemporary contexts, working towards cultural resilience and longevity. In addition to fashion design, Keila's specialisms include draping, Adobe's Creative Suite and fashion illustrations.

Tradition survives when you allow it to evolve. Binar by La Chimera is a Spring/Summer 2027 ready-to-wear brand inspired by Keila's Banjarese roots (Banjarmasin, Kalimantan) that emphasises how ethnic identities, especially from Indonesia, face dilution of culture due to migration to another city, media influences and modern trends. The Baamar Galung Pancaran Matahari is Banjarese bridal attire Keila saw worn at her aunt and uncles' weddings, which inspired her iconic garment and textile direction. The symbolic centipede on the attire motivates Binar's textile techniques of spray dye and silk-screen printing, as well as two techniques that have been adopted from the attire itself: hand beading and fabric dyeing. In re-imagining yet preserving the designer's Banjarese heritage, Binar contemporises through its style of bold, fun colours that elevate traditional bridal attire into a modern collection of cultural continuity.
