SKINNED

Chloe Lok is passionate about visual storytelling, drawing inspiration from psychological horror and fantasy films. Her fashion visuals reflect a fascination with the macabre, including references to physical alterations and surgeries. For her Final Year Project, she explores the aesthetics of plastic surgery and body modification to challenge societal perceptions and celebrate unconventional beauty.

SKINNED is a publication that explores modern body modification through the lens of Egyptian mythology, specifically focusing on Hathor's attributes. It aims to initiate dialogue on body modification and the cosmetic gaze, promoting empathy and self-empowerment. By reinterpreting Hathor's story, it seeks to challenge societal beauty norms and encourage inclusivity. Through a visual narrative, it addresses the emotional challenges of conforming to beauty standards, creating a supportive space for those undergoing or considering body modification or cosmetic procedures. The photography and creative direction references and attempts to emulate, the works of renowned South Korean photographer Cho Gi-Seok as well as Malaysian-born and Taipei-based photographer Zhong Ling - an exercise conducted to study their photography techniques and fashion styling with an Asian fashion language - while adding a cultural perspective to the project. Ultimately, SKINNED aims to positively redefine beauty ideals.
